Our Missions
Spirit Groove Austin (“SGA”) produces innovative, alternative entertainment experiences which honor Christ and reach a diverse audience. SGA brings exposure to Christian artists, dynamic speakers and charitable community organizations.
Spirit Groove is Austin’s premier live arts experience, powered by a Christian worldview, set within a non-church atmosphere. Spirit Groove offers Christians exceptional entertainment and pre-Christians an authentic view of Christ.
What is Spirit Groove?
The simple answer: think of it as Love Jones (that is, the artistic elements within it), but for the Christian.
Spirit Groove is a fusion of music, spoken word, drama, dance and the word of God. Our first Friday event is a musical and spiritual experience designed to provide an atmosphere of worship where Biblical truths are brought to life in fresh and creative ways.
It’’s a merging of the Spirit with the Groove. When we say “Spirit,” we mean the Holy Spirit. The role of the Holy Spirit is to guide, comfort, convict and teach us so that believers in Christ can move toward holiness and perfection.
When we say “Groove,” we use multiple definitions. A groove describes rhythms and beats; it also can be defined as the place and purpose of life for which you were created. When you find your “groove” in life, you find a phenomenal place of peace, productivity and prosperity. You actually are free to do exactly what God created you to do.
Spirit Groove provides a place where artists, poets, vocalists, musicians and others can express themselves creatively and freely. The bottom line is always what God says and the biblical perspective.
Ultimately, Spirit Groove strives to use new sights and sounds to bring the story of Christ and His love to those who feel detached from the church or feel that Christianity is not relevant to their everyday lives. It is also a place where believers can take their worship higher and beyond Sunday service.
How Did Spirit Groove in Austin Start?
Tim Richardson created Spirit Groove Austin in 2006. Richardson sought to provide an alternative worship experience in a non-traditional setting in Austin. Richardson based this concept around the original Spirit Groove held in Dallas, founded by the late McKinley “Mak” Hailey in 2000. Hailey desired to touch and reach young adults across the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex via the club scene in Deep Ellum. Richardson quickly caught on to Hailey’s vision and the Lord led him to bring that vision and plant it in Austin during his years there as a student.
Since its inception in Austin, Spirit Groove has featured Christian artists, poets, dancers, speakers and actors from around Texas.
Who’s on Staff with SGA?
The SGA staff is a rag-tag bunch, consisting of three hotties and two hunks!
- Kimberly, the PR powerhouse and media maven; she is The Network. Who does she not know?
- Marchele, the SG “glue”, the driving force for getting SG organized every month; ask her about getting “jazzy”.
- Litanya, the official face of SGA hospitality, and spokeswoman for all things chocolate. No, you can’t run your fingers through her hair!
- Brett, a prolific poet, and a man who manages to connect all the wires and run the sound while eating wings.
- Dennis (aka “StrUHT”), a wannabe graphic designer and up-and-coming marketing guru. He’s a gym rat and occasionally spits a rhyme or two when an open mic is present.
